Wentworth – Extended Sentence

Wentworth Season 8

Wentworth may have been inspired by female jail drama Prisoner but it is on track to be on air longer than the show that spawned it. Prisoner ran from 1979-86, Wentworth started in 2013 and will end in 2021. However, while Wentworth was a “re-imagining” of Prisoner, and borrowed characters including Bea Smith, Joan “The Freak” Ferguson, Vera Bennett and Lizzie Birdsworth, it quickly forged its own identity.

It now airs in over 15o countries and screens on Netflix in the US.

It is Wentworth’s graphic, violent scenes, intense storylines and LGBTQ characters that have created a fiercely loyal fanbase.
“People tell me they watch Wentworth episodes and they have to sit on their couch afterwards and take a break,” Leah Purcell, who plays Rita Connors (another Prisoner character rebooted) says.

“That’s what you want.

You want good drama that moves people, whether you hate or love a character, if you feel something you’ve done your job.”

Pamela Rabe | Season 5 HQ PromoThe fanbase is so loyal that when the show was planned to end in 2018 after season seven, fans got wind of the decision before it was announced (a loose-lipped actor also let it slip during a TV interview) and determined to save their favourite show.
Fans not only started a #savewent-worth campaign on social media, there were claims one diehard viewer flew a drone over the show’s Melbourne set to see if the outdoor jail area had been disassembled. (more…)

Wentworth Season 8 is coming in June: “Things will change”

Wentworth Season 8 is coming to Foxtel in June 2020 and we got 2 new promo photos of Pamela Rabe as Joan Ferguson plus the following short teaser video:

Some secrets don’t stay buried…

Hold up! Wentworth’s eighth season will be with us in June. And a new cast photo reveals a very Freak-y development!

Stop the (steam) press! We now know when Wentworth’s eighth season is due to hit FOX SHOWCASE.

You’d better spend the next few months familiarising yourself with all the teal trauma we’ve seen over seven seasons, as the new instalment has been confirmed to arrive in June.

By then, we might have just about recovered from the incredibly tense siege that was the culmination of last year’s seventh season, which many fans and critics have dubbed the best ever of this Logie-winning drama.

Pamela Rabe as Joan Ferguson in Wentworth Season 8 - Coming June 2020

Robbie Magasiva, whose character Will Jackson had the misfortune of being acting governor while the siege occurred, says it’s certainly going to be a prickly time for Will – especially considering the siege was brought about by the inmate he’d been romantically involved with: namely Marie Winter (Susie Porter). And that’s only the beginning! “I think things in the broader picture of Wentworth Prison will change,” he tells us.

And if the siege itself wasn’t tense enough, fans won’t forget that final shot before the credits rolled – seeing Joan ‘The Freak’ Ferguson (Pamela Rabe) standing by the side of the road. Considering we’d thought she’d been buried alive, it was one almighty mic-drop!

With Rabe appearing in the cast shot for the new season, everyone (inmates, prison staff and viewers included) will surely need to watch their backs. Magasiva will only tease us with this: “Everything’s hunky-dory until The Freak comes back.”

Wentworth to end after Season 9

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Season 7 of Wentworth…

Wentworth fans will be sad to hear the iconic prison drama is coming to an end, with filming for the final 20 episodes set to commence soon. Foxtel Executive Director of TV Brian Walsh confirmed the upcoming episodes will be the show’s final batch, in a recent interview with TV Tonight.
However, the show won’t be wrapping up in a hurry. Those episodes will be spread over two seasons, expected to conclude in 2021. The additional episodes, which will make up season eight and nine, will officially cement Wentworth’s status as Australia’s longest-running one hour drama series.
“Foxtel is proud and delighted to confirm a further 20 episodes of Wentworth. The renewal of this much loved drama is testament to Foxtel’s unwavering commitment to Australian story-telling,” Brian told TV WEEK earlier this year when the series was renenwed.
“Wentworth has captivated audiences in Australia and all over the world with its gritty nailbiting storylines, remarkable performances by an extensive ensemble cast and high production values. The commissioning of these additional episodes will see it reach an extraordinary 100 episodes”.

Pamela Rabe is back as Joan Ferguson in Wentworth Season 8The Freak sat by a fire pit, staring ominously at the flames.

The announcement follows on from a jaw-dropping finale to the seventh season, which ended with a number of bombshells. First and foremost, Joan “The Freak” Ferguson was revealed to be ALIVE.
The final episode picked up with Sean Brody (Rick Donald) and prisoner Marie Winter (Susie Porter) keeping several inmates, along with pregnant Governor Vera Bennett (Kate Atkinson), hostage. In the siege, Brody killed Vicky Kosta (Artemis Ioannides) and Boomer’s mum May Jenkins (Anni Finsterer).
We also found out it was Brody who killed the prison’s top dog Kaz Proctor (Tammy MacIntosh), after he discovered she knew about the blackmail file Marie had on the Attorney General Michael Heston (David Downer).
As this played out, the corrupt Attorney General arrived to make sure his operation to get Marie to safety was going according to plan. He “agreed to Brody’s demands” and ordered a chopper to the prison. (more…)

Wentworth – The Freak is Alive! Pamela Rabe Will Return For Season 8

Almost had a heart attack after seeing the last few seconds of season 7! Best news 2019 so far! Check out this nowtolove.com.au article for everything about this fantastic Wentworth season finale + a short video of Joan’s return!

Jo Porter about the episode:

Jo, we need to know, was it always your intention to have The Freak re-appear at some point?
You might have noticed we never had DNA confirmation that it was actually her in the box – and if anyone could pull this off, well it would be Joan! I can’t wait for the audience theories on how this was possible. I will say [script producer] Marcia Gardner and her writing team have once again done an incredible job of earthing the Joan story – no pun intended!
We know it’s early days, but can you hint at what may be explored in the final 20 episodes?
The ending of series seven has left some tantalising story threads hanging. How will the prison rebuild after the trauma of the failed siege (Marie has been exposed to the women for her role in this)? How will Boomer and Ruby cope inside without the person who had their back? Rita is in police protection, we’ll see Vera coping as a mother, and who will take over the mantle of Top Dog? And, of course, the big one – just how DID Joan Ferguson survive?
